Authorities in Madrid have swiftly refuted Italian claims that the new 'Madring' Formula 1 circuit in the Spanish capital might not be completed in time for its planned debut in 2026, with Imola suggested as a potential alternative.
The rumors arose from RMC Motori, whose reporters observed the construction site and reported "idle excavators," extensive undeveloped areas, and minimal visible advancement, alleging that sources from Liberty Media had expressed concerns about delays. One staff member reportedly responded with "what track?" when questioned at the IFEMA Madrid entrance.
However, officials in Spain maintain that the project is not only on track but also ahead in certain phases. Circuit organizers told Soy Motor: "The work is entirely on schedule. There are no issues regarding timelines, and the Grand Prix will take place on the intended dates."
Madrid’s Regional Minister Miguel Angel Garcia Martin reinforced this statement, assuring that the residents of Madrid can feel secure as the work is advancing well, with all scheduled tasks being executed. He noted that construction started in May and is on track for completion by the end of May 2026.
Madrid mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida was even more definitive in his statements. "I don’t know where that news originated," he stated to reporters. "The circuit is ahead of schedule and developing perfectly. The sponsors are on board, and the circuit is under construction, so I'm sorry—but Formula 1 will be in Madrid on September 12 next year, and it will be a total success."
Additionally, Spanish daily Marca reflected a similar level of reassurance from the Madring organization, with local officials indicating that all planned work is progressing "at a good pace." The city has also noted that FIA officials are set to conduct a formal inspection on December 15.
