BYD is exploring the possibility of debuting in Formula 1.
Chinese automaker BYD is exploring options for participation in motorsport, including Formula 1 and the World Endurance Championship, as part of its strategy to increase brand recognition outside of China. According to sources familiar with the situation, the company is considering various scenarios—from creating its own team to purchasing an existing one. Any move by BYD would be a rare direct attempt by a Chinese manufacturer to establish itself in a sport traditionally dominated by European and American teams. Previously, Chinese automakers have only shown sporadic interest in motorsport. For example, Geely has successfully competed in international touring with its team Cyan Racing, which was formerly Volvo's factory team, and in the first season of Formula E in 2015, Nelson Piquet Jr. became the drivers' champion with China Racing, which changed its name to NEXTEV TCR during the season. According to one source, the potential costs of participating in Formula 1 could pose a significant obstacle for BYD. Establishing a team from scratch would require years of preparation and is estimated to cost up to $500 million per year. As a result, no decision has been made at this time, and the company may completely abandon racing programs. A BYD representative did not comment on the matter. Recently, BYD surpassed Tesla to become the world's leader in electric vehicle sales. Participation in Formula 1 could significantly enhance brand recognition in the U.S., where the company currently does not sell its cars, mainly due to high tariffs and market restrictions.
