Massa questions whether Alonso is enjoying F1 during Aston's difficulties.
Felipe Massa has raised concerns about whether Fernando Alonso is still finding joy in Formula 1, especially given Aston Martin's poor start to the 2026 season. The Spaniard has faced a challenging beginning to the year, including a retirement in China due to severe vibrations from the struggling Honda-powered car. Massa, who was once Alonso's teammate at Ferrari, expressed uncertainty over how long the two-time world champion can endure these circumstances.
"I truly hope he continues to enjoy racing in Formula 1, although I’m not convinced he’s finding much joy at the moment," he told Diario Sport. "He’s dealing with numerous issues."
While he acknowledged Alonso's skill, Massa implied that the 44-year-old should think carefully about when to retire. "I don’t believe Fernando should be in Formula 1 fighting at the back of the grid," the Brazilian, who is also 44, stated. "There are many other categories where he can enjoy himself and have fun. However, I hope that when he realizes it’s time to step away, he does so at the right time."
Massa regarded Alonso as the toughest competitor he has faced. "He was undoubtedly the best rival I've ever gone up against," he remarked, suggesting that age will inevitably be a consideration for Alonso. "We have to recognize that age is very significant in sports," Massa continued, hinting that even Lewis Hamilton may not be far from retirement. "Perhaps it’s time for them to pursue different endeavors."
Massa also added his voice to the criticism of the new 2026 regulations in Formula 1. "What’s happening in Formula 1 isn’t enjoyable. It’s not what people want to see," he stated. "We do see overtaking, but not the desirable kind - rather the undesirable kind." He indicated that both Aston Martin and the sport itself face crucial challenges moving forward. "Aston Martin certainly has a tough journey ahead," Massa noted. "But Formula 1 must also figure out how to enhance the regulations for everyone."
