Massa questions whether Alonso is enjoying F1 while facing challenges with Aston Martin.
Felipe Massa has expressed uncertainty about whether Fernando Alonso is still finding enjoyment in Formula 1 due to Aston Martin's poor start to the 2026 season. The Spaniard has had a dreadful beginning to the year, including a retirement in China caused by difficulties with intense vibrations from the team's disappointing Honda-powered car. Massa, who was Alonso’s teammate at Ferrari, revealed he is unsure how long the two-time world champion can endure these circumstances.
"I truly hope he continues to find joy in racing in Formula 1, but I’m not sure he’s enjoying it much at the moment," he told Diario Sport. "He’s facing many challenges." While he acknowledged Alonso’s talent, Massa suggested that the 44-year-old should carefully evaluate the timing of his eventual departure. "I don’t believe Fernando is a driver who should be competing at the back of the grid in Formula 1," said the Brazilian, who is also 44. "There are many other racing categories where he could find enjoyment and fun. But I hope when he realizes it’s time to step away, he does so at the right moment."
Massa characterized Alonso as the toughest opponent he has ever faced. "He was undoubtedly the best competitor I’ve ever raced against," he said, implying that age will ultimately play a role for Alonso. "We need to recognize that age is crucial in sports," Massa remarked, noting that even Lewis Hamilton may not be far from retirement. "Perhaps it’s the right time for them to pursue other ventures."
Massa also joined the chorus of criticism directed at the new 2026 regulations in Formula 1. "What’s occurring in Formula 1 isn’t enjoyable. It’s not what fans want to see," he stated. "Certainly, we see overtaking, but not the correct type – it's the wrong kind." He mentioned that both Aston Martin and Formula 1 itself face significant challenges ahead. "Aston Martin indeed has a tough path to navigate," Massa said. "But Formula 1 also needs to figure out how to enhance the regulations for all participants."
