Schumacher criticizes 'shameful' mistreatment following Colapinto-Ocon incident.

Ralf Schumacher has criticized the "shameful" online harassment aimed at Esteban Ocon after his crash with Franco Colapinto in China. The incident resulted in a surge of toxic messages on social media, prompting Colapinto's management to make a public appeal for fans to refrain from sending "hate or death threats" to the Haas driver. Schumacher expressed that this situation reveals a troubling trend.

"We also need to address the negative side of Argentine fans, and this isn't the first instance," he told Sky Deutschland. The former F1 racer emphasized that the boundary is crossed when sports-related incidents turn into personal attacks.

"That's truly terrible," Schumacher remarked. "I think it’s sad and disgraceful, as it no longer pertains to sports." He highlighted that the issue isn't about nationality but rather about a small faction of fans who go too far.

"I know Argentina - a wonderful country with wonderful people," he stated. "But especially online, those who voice criticism often face backlash or even threats." Schumacher advocates for tougher measures.

"Violence or calls for violence online are unacceptable. Such behavior has no place in this world," he mentioned. He also indicated that even Colapinto's team has acknowledged the gravity of the situation.

"The individuals around Colapinto have also emphasized that no one should be sending hate or death threats," Schumacher remarked. He added that these incidents are becoming increasingly common as Formula 1's global audience grows.

"With Netflix, Formula 1 has expanded significantly," he noted. "There are many more fans now - and unfortunately, some of them are of this nature." For Schumacher, the repercussions ultimately pose a risk to the driver at the center of the situation.

"This is not a positive representation for Argentina and certainly not what Franco Colapinto desires," he concluded.
