On Monday, we relayed insights directly from the Corvette team, indicating that there are no current plans for the C8 to include the manual transmission that many fans have been requesting. Engineers Tony Roma and Josh Holder specifically addressed speculation surrounding a new 6-speed transaxle unveiled by Tremec at SEMA last fall, which some hoped could become a factory option for the mid-engine Corvette. Tremec itself has not made any such claims, but Roma’s remarks were particularly striking as they cast doubt on the very existence of the transaxle.
“Tremec revealed something at SEMA last year that I wish they hadn’t, as it’s not real,” Roma stated to a crowd during the 12 Hours of Sebring last weekend. “So, when people claim, ‘But there’s one available,’ there isn’t. It’s not real. We have no plans to discuss a manual transmission.”
When Tremec introduced the transaxle in October, it did so through a press release highlighting that the new gearbox utilizes the same mounting points as the TR-9080 DCT already found in the C8. “This enables builders to use existing factory Corvette components for simpler installation,” the release mentioned.

In their materials, Tremec did not suggest that the transaxle was more than an aftermarket alternative to the sports car’s stock DCT. However, contrary to Roma’s assertions, it does appear to be a “real” component, prompting us to seek clarification from the transmission specialists.
“At this time, we do not have any comments to share regarding the statements made,” a representative from Tremec’s marketing team said in an email to The Drive. “We respect that our customers and partners are entitled to their own views, but unfortunately, we cannot provide further commentary at this time.”
So, there it is. Future C8 owners will not have the option to select a 6-speed manual transaxle when customizing their sports car, but hopefully, an aftermarket solution will emerge for those willing to tackle the installation themselves. If anyone manages to swap one into a C8, please let us know how it turns out.
