Komatsu: I can't even see the limits of Berman's abilities.
Haas F1 has started the season very confidently, and although only Oliver Berman is currently earning points, the American team is in 4th place in the Constructors' Championship after two rounds. Ayo Komatsu, its leader, is very pleased with how things are going and especially noted the contribution of the young British driver.
Question: The start of the season for Haas is going wonderfully, your team is in 4th place in the Constructors' Championship and is only one point behind McLaren. What aspects of the team's performance in the first two races have pleased you the most? Ayo Komatsu: I am pleased with how well the entire team is working together. Everyone knows how difficult it was to prepare for the transition to the new technical regulations, and since Haas is the smallest team in the championship, it was even more challenging for us to tackle this task.
But we managed to handle everything well at all stages of this process – from the initial shakedown to the pre-season tests in Bahrain, and now we continue to work during the races. We are trying to learn literally on every lap our cars run on the track.
In general, we have to learn a lot, and we need to do it quickly. Moreover, it has to be done on the track because we may lack some tools that top teams have at their disposal. But all team members work together as efficiently as possible, and we strive to achieve improvements in every session, with every outing on the track, and this is reflected in the results.
We have always said that first and foremost, we need to create a solid foundation. Technical problems are possible in the first five races of the season, and it is normal when Formula 1 transitions to a new technical regulation. We are keeping an eye on what is happening with the teams that are ahead of us, and if they encounter problems, we must be ready to take their positions and move forward.
In my opinion, we are mostly succeeding at this so far, although not completely, as we have not yet managed to have both cars finish in the points. But overall, I am very pleased with how the team is performing.
Question: How long do you think you can maintain this level? Ayo Komatsu: Good question. We know what we are lacking, we know what we are capable of, and you could say that work is being done in parallel on two fronts. First of all, we are trying to achieve the best possible results using everything we already have at our disposal. At the same time, we are in the process of installing a simulator at our base in Banbury, and we also need to acquire some additional tools.
I think the pace of modernization will be very high, but at least we started the season with a car that already has decent characteristics. A quality foundation has already been created, and we know that the direction we have chosen is correct. But to keep up with the others, we must intensively work on refining the car; that is the only question.
Question: Continuing the discussion about results, it should be noted that Oliver Berman is performing very well, taking every opportunity to earn points. Do you think he made a step forward during the winter break? Ayo Komatsu: He is constantly progressing. Everyone saw the improvements he made over the past year. We never doubted his speed, and towards the end of the year, we noted that he had improved in stability. In Mexico, he finished 4th, handling the intense pressure excellently.
Then during the pre-season preparations, throughout the tests, he worked a lot with the engineers and mechanics, sharing his thoughts about the car and striving for improvements in everything. If we recall the first two races, he made almost no mistakes.
Oliver possesses all the qualities that distinguish a great driver: the ability to absorb information, see the big picture, predict the development of events during races, and effectively use all of this. And what is especially important is that his positive attitude helps everyone who works with him to also demonstrate their best qualities – engineers, mechanics, everyone.
Even if the situation is not going well, how he acts and conducts himself does not bring people down; on the contrary, it motivates them to find quick solutions to problems. And he does this completely naturally, which is why we enjoy working with him. The most remarkable thing is that I don't even see the limit of his capabilities yet.
