There may be a new American champion at the Nurburgring.
Numerous videos circulating online show the Ford Mustang GTD racing around the Nurburgring on Tuesday in what seems to be a record attempt. A video from the StatesideSupercars YouTube channel, embedded below, claims that the updated Mustang GTD completed the ‘Ring in 6:41.74.
If accurate, this time would mean the Ford Mustang GTD has significantly outperformed the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1’s record of 6:50.763, along with the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X’s time of 6:49.275. Moreover, it would indicate that the Mustang GTD is faster than the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series, Porsche 911 GT2 RS MR, and even the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey Performance.
Ford appears to have been determined, and it may have succeeded.
StatesideSupercars points out that the 6:41.74 timing could be off by around a second due to the starting and finishing line being obscured. Even if the time isn’t entirely precise, it still positions the Mustang GTD as the American ‘Ring champion. Additionally, it elevates the Mustang GTD to an exclusive echelon.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG One completed the ‘Ring in 6:29.090. The AMG One is effectively a street-legal supercar featuring an F1 race car powertrain, which makes this situation even more extraordinary.
A Ford representative told The Drive, “Like we said, game on.” Indeed.
For the sake of record, the Ford Mustang GTD was the first American vehicle to achieve a sub-7-minute lap at the ‘Ring. Ford later surpassed its own record by 5.5 seconds just a few months later. Then Team Chevy came along and overshadowed Ford by setting new records with both the Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X.
Ford CEO Jim Farley took this challenge personally. He congratulated Team Chevy and promptly stated, “Game on.” He meant it.
Team Ford returned to the ‘Ring with a modified Mustang GTD last October, clearly testing enhancements that would subsequently lead to a record-setting run. This potentially historic run seems to have occurred yesterday.
We await confirmation from Ford. There may very well be a new champion in town, and Ford did not just shave off a second or two. This time, Ford might have cut off 10.3 seconds, give or take a second. Impressive.
