Antonelli catches up with Russell as Italian media poses a significant question.

"The team advised us not to fool around."

Pressure is increasing on championship leader George Russell at Mercedes as teammate Kimi Antonelli experiences a swift rise in the early stages of 2026. After his landmark victory in China, the 19-year-old claimed a second straight pole position and win at Suzuka, with La Gazzetta dello Sport now questioning: "Is the passing of Russell starting?"

Russell, who was leading the championship by 4 points before Sunday’s race, now finds himself 9 points behind. He was competitive in qualifying but dissatisfied with the car's balance.

"We made a rear adjustment before qualifying. It was really just a minor tweak," he stated. "Then I went out and it felt like something had broken at the back."

Team principal Toto Wolff downplayed the problem as a setup error, but within the dominant team, the internal rivalry is becoming more pronounced.

"The team advised us not to fool around," Antonelli disclosed, as Mercedes is cautious about potential contact between its two championship contenders.

The Italian, however, is clearly relishing the competition. "Compared to last year, I already feel like a different person due to the experience I've gained," he remarked. "Ultimately, we're the only two driving the same car, so it could become a contest between us. I’ll do my best to be prepared in every way, including any mental challenges. It's a fantastic opportunity, and I want to capitalize on it."

Simultaneously, Antonelli adopted a more reserved approach regarding Russell’s abilities. "We have the same car. He’s even stronger than me in the fast corners, but for the team, the key is to secure valuable points," he said.
