Piastri received a warning.

Considering the circumstances of the incident that occurred during the third practice session, when Oscar Piastri hindered Nico Hülkenberg, who was on a fast lap, while warming up his tires on the straight between turns 14 and 15, the stewards of the Japanese Grand Prix issued an official warning to the McLaren driver.

In his defense, Oscar stated that he received a message about the approaching car and saw it in the mirrors as Nico exited turn 14. According to him, at that moment, the competitor was far enough behind that he had enough time to warm up his tires and move to the left at the exit of turn 15.

He said he was on full throttle on the long straight, and telemetry confirmed this. He claimed he misjudged the closing speed because he relied on the virtual mirror system. However, this incident showed him that the data update frequency in the virtual mirror system is insufficient to timely warn the driver of significant closeness.
