Subaru’s push towards electrification has led to a new range of electric SUVs, including the Solterra, Uncharted, Trailseeker, and now the upcoming three-row 2027 Getaway. However, Subaru's electric strategy is not entirely focused on EVs. Hybrids are set to play a more significant role in the lineup in the upcoming years, beginning with the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid.

This latest Wilderness variant will feature the most fuel-efficient powertrain within that sub-brand, according to Subaru. The fundamentals take a slightly different direction: in addition to the standard 2.5-liter flat-four engine, a lithium-ion battery and electric motors will generate 194 horsepower and improve fuel economy on the Wilderness edition by up to 25%. This could elevate the standard Wilderness model’s 26-mpg combined rating into the low-30-mpg range once final EPA figures are released.

Beyond the hybrid system enhancements, the Wilderness edition continues to be the off-road expert among Foresters. It boasts a ground clearance of 9.3 inches, along with a revised suspension and its own all-terrain tires. The X-Mode traction system and Subaru's signature all-wheel-drive remain intact as well. Additionally, Forester Wilderness wagons are equipped with more sound insulation and body adhesives to enhance durability, Subaru states.

The 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid will come with features like roof rails, 17-inch matte black wheels, an 11.6-inch touchscreen equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch digital display featuring integrated Apple Maps, synthetic leather seating, 576 watts of Harman Kardon audio, and adaptive cruise control. Pricing details are yet to be announced, but the new hybrid is expected to launch in late 2026.
