Subaru's push towards electrification has led to the development of a new lineup of electric SUVs, including the Solterra, Uncharted, Trailseeker, and now a new three-row 2027 Getaway. However, Subaru’s electric ambitions are not entirely exclusive, as hybrids will increasingly feature in their lineup in the coming years, starting with the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid.

According to Subaru, this newest Wilderness model will have the most efficient powertrain within that sub-brand. The foundation remains slightly unconventional: alongside the typical 2.5-liter flat-four engine, Subaru integrates a lithium-ion battery and electric motors to generate 194 horsepower and enhance fuel efficiency in the Wilderness edition by as much as 25%. This could potentially elevate the standard Wilderness model’s combined rating of 26 mpg to the low-30 mpg range once the final EPA figures are released.

Beyond the hybrid enhancements, the Wilderness edition continues to be the off-road expert among Foresters. It offers 9.3 inches of ground clearance, a modified suspension setup, and distinctive all-terrain tires. Subaru's X-Mode traction system and its signature all-wheel-drive remain unchanged as well. Additionally, the Forester Wilderness models feature increased sound insulation and body adhesive for added durability, as noted by Subaru.

The 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid includes roof rails, 17-inch matte black wheels, an 11.6-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch digital display with integrated Apple Maps, synthetic leather seating, 576 watts of Harman Kardon audio, and adaptive cruise control. Pricing details have yet to be revealed, but the new hybrid is expected to launch in late 2026.
