Gina Schumacher shares insights about her father in a rare new documentary.
"I really immersed myself in it because I needed to take action."
A unique and heartfelt glimpse into Michael Schumacher's life has come to light, as his daughter Gina-Maria opens up in a new documentary about dealing with the aftermath of her father's 2013 accident. The German broadcaster ZDF has created "Horsepower - The World of Gina Schumacher," providing an intimate view of the typically reserved family.
In an exclusive preview reported by Bild newspaper, the 29-year-old shares how her love for horses became her refuge during one of the toughest times in her life. "After Dad's accident, I really immersed myself in it because I needed to take action," Gina expressed. "Horses have always been significant to me. But since then, they’ve truly become... I mean, they are essential in my life. They have helped me navigate through everything."
Her mother Corinna also recalls a poignant moment involving a prediction made by the seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher. "Michael once told me, when Gina was only 10: ‘Gina will be much better than you,’" she reminisced. His reasoning was equally telling. "Because she’s more self-focused. To be an athlete, a certain level of selfishness is necessary. And that’s fantastic. Otherwise, you won’t achieve anything."
Corinna reflected, "Now I think, ‘He was absolutely right.’" Today, Gina stands as one of the leading Western riders globally, yet she remains humble despite her achievements. "I’m thankful that I have this opportunity. My parents made it possible," she said. "That’s why it has always been important for me to exert myself in this area, so I can perform to the best of my abilities."
