Let me clarify something right away: if you’re a die-hard GTA fan, the information I’m about to share may not be new to you. We’re primarily not a gaming site, and while several team members are avid Grand Theft Auto players (myself included since the top-down era), we aren’t always up to date with the latest developments. So when Adam discovered a crowdsourced map of the fictional state of Leonida (the setting for Vice City and GTA 6) and spotted a location labeled “Gellhorn International Raceway” resembling the real Sebring, we were both taken aback—and it prompted the question: Has GTA ever truly featured a race track?

Surprisingly, the answer is no. Racing has existed as a sub-game in GTA since its inception, but it has always taken the form of street or off-road competitions rather than proper asphalt tracks. Vice City had a small dirt track, while GTA 5 included a horse racing track that also serves as a dirt oval and an improvised off-road course near Sandy Shores Airfield (where Trevor operates his flying business in later stages of the game), but the count of genuine road courses in the GTA series remains at zero.

Examining an excerpt from the west-central part of the proposed map shows a significant amount of uncertainty, with everything grey representing the 2022 leak that initially hinted at the track being part of GTA 6. Anything marked in red is still unverified.

Although there’s a lot of speculation, the evidence is quite persuasive. The "Sunset Bend" (turn 17) from Sebring can be seen next to the (5) label on the map. While that name may no longer fit—it received that title because it faces directly west, not northeast. The aerial view of the track provided below has been adjusted to match the orientation of the in-game track, emphasizing the similarities.

Not only does Sebring appear to be replicated here, but it seems to be part of a larger motorsports complex. North of turn 17, there looks to be a paddock and a staging area/tree for a drag strip. Some internet detectives have pointed out similarities to Gainesville Raceway, although the evidence isn't as compelling compared to the road course.

The individuals who scrutinized the 2022 leaks didn’t just uncover a map; they also found a name mentioned in the game’s code for one of its world events. This gave rise to the "Gellhorn International Raceway" label, and whether Rockstar is playfully teasing us or there's more evidence supporting its existence has been bolstered by the game's second official trailer.

You can check it out via the link above (skip to around 1:57), where Lucia is wearing a shirt featuring noticeable branding. Observant fans have further identified the car on her shirt as a Dominator ASP (the GTA equivalent of a Mustang Cobra), but the key detail for us is the “Gellhorn International” phrase emblazoned on top.

As noted by our editor-in-chief Kyle Cheromcha in The Drive's Slack, Gellhorn could possibly reference Martha Gellhorn, a WWII correspondent who was married to Ernest Hemingway and the only female journalist at D-Day. Motorsport enthusiasts will recognize that Sebring was constructed on a former WWII airfield.

This may be old news and hasn’t been confirmed by Rockstar yet, but it seems plausible. Including a fully functional race track for the first time could allow Rockstar to create a hub location, enabling a more enriched and varied racing sub-game for GTA 6’s eventual online mode. Imagine a setup similar to the hub sites in Microsoft’s Forza Horizon open-world racing series, where multiple hub locations exist, but given Grand Theft Auto’s various activities beyond racing, a single location would likely suffice.

If this proves to be true, Grand Theft Auto 6 might attract an even wider audience than previous editions. We’re definitely curious; it’s just unfortunate that we have seven more months to wait for definitive answers.
