Antonelli acknowledges the possibility of a title chance, though Russell has the advantage.
"Experience is my greatest weakness"
Kimi Antonelli believes he has the potential to contend for the 2026 world championship but concedes that his teammate George Russell still has the upper hand. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver, now the youngest championship leader in Formula 1 history, adopted a measured tone during interviews with both Bild and Sky Italia over the April break.
"Yes, absolutely," Antonelli responded when Bild inquired if his swift ascent feels surreal. "It's astonishing how much attention I received. I bought the newspapers the following day, read them, and I plan to keep them. Of course, it's enjoyable and feels good – but it's also risky. It’s easy to lose focus and get swept up when everyone is celebrating you. I've also noticed that expectations of me have shifted significantly. That's why I've decided to avoid social media on race weekends, to keep additional pressure at bay. The reality is, there are still 19 races to go. I aim to achieve more than just one victory. My ultimate goal is to be in the title fight by the season’s end and ultimately win it."
Despite his confidence, Antonelli candidly acknowledged his primary limitation. "Experience is my biggest weakness compared to drivers like George, no doubt about it. That’s something you can’t purchase. But I believe I would still have a chance if the opportunity presents itself. I have been working towards this for many years, and my victory demonstrated that I can defeat anyone if I perform to my potential. However, to do that, I need to solidify the fundamentals."
In a separate conversation with Sky Italia, Antonelli expressed his frustration regarding the enforced April break. "Certainly, it's unfortunate that we have such a long hiatus, but I’m not complaining too much as I get to spend several days at home. That’s important because the start of the season has been quite intense." Nevertheless, he would prefer to be racing. "Yes, I’m already missing the track. It’s disappointing because when you’re in such a critical phase... ultimately, we’re coming off a strong start to the season. The car is performing exceptionally well. This break allows our rivals more chances to catch up."
Antonelli also shared that he was not entirely satisfied even after his victory in Suzuka. "Yes, I must admit that in Japan on Sunday, I didn’t enjoy the victory as much as I wished because I was frustrated about the start. I realized I was quite lucky despite that. I was really upset about the start; it was a real shock, making me want to tear my hair out. I’m already working on it." He plans to use the break to improve. "Definitely in the simulator for the starts. I’ll get the steering wheel with all my settings. Let’s just say I’m already considering how to enhance these starts."
