Marko acknowledges that the exit from 'GP' was anticipated as concerns about Verstappen increase.
"You shouldn't prevent someone from leaving."
Dr. Helmut Marko has acknowledged that he was already aware of Gianpiero Lambiase’s intended exit as speculation continues to grow about Max Verstappen’s future. "I’ve known for a while that ‘GP’ would be moving to McLaren," Marko, the former team advisor, shared with the Krone newspaper in Vienna. "He’s a valuable member of the team, and naturally, he’s bound by a non-compete clause, which means he could take confidential information or specialized knowledge with him."
The Austrian also recognized the potential impact this could have on Verstappen, whose long-term commitment to Red Bull is facing heightened scrutiny. "The situation for Max is becoming increasingly critical - the key to his staying is that he can start winning again soon," Marko commented. This aligns with growing rumors in the paddock suggesting that Verstappen might exercise an exit clause in his contract if Red Bull struggles to remain competitive by mid-season.
Former driver Ralf Schumacher believes that Lambiase’s move could hasten this process. "I think there will be discussions between the two sides. I can’t picture him completing 2027 at Red Bull," he stated. "It will now likely revolve around a transfer fee, as when a decision is made this early, it typically involves the engineer departing."
Schumacher further pointed out that Red Bull may not make a strong effort to retain Verstappen. "You shouldn't hinder someone who wishes to leave. Gianpiero Lambiase always said ‘I’m staying with Max and Max with him.’ That sentiment no longer seems to hold. From my perspective, Max will be looking for new options next year."
He provided multiple scenarios, including a potential shift to McLaren. "On one hand, this could indicate he departs Red Bull because he has lost faith in the team and might leave entirely," he explained. "Alternatively, he could join McLaren with his engineer, suggesting that negotiations are underway involving Oscar Piastri moving to Red Bull."
Dutch journalist Erik van Haren, who is well-connected with the Verstappen camp, concurs that the situation is dynamic. "A lot is transpiring behind the scenes, and even more will unfold in the coming months regarding Verstappen," he told De Telegraaf. "McLaren’s Zak Brown is very intrigued by Max, and there’s significant mutual respect. With Lambiase on board, they’ll have an added advantage."
"But that doesn’t end there. Ferrari and Mercedes will certainly be monitoring the situation as well."
