George Russell: I will understand Verstappen if he decides to leave.
In 2026, Max Verstappen repeatedly stated that he does not like the new generation of cars and even hinted at leaving Formula 1. His rival, Mercedes driver George Russell, said he would understand the four-time world champion if Max decides to continue his career in endurance racing.
"Formula 1 is more important than any driver," Racer quotes George as saying. "But we wouldn't want to lose Max, as I believe we all enjoy racing against him.
Dissatisfaction with the car is an integral part of Formula 1. I didn't like driving the 2022 car, which was prone to bouncing and was killing our backs. The car was big and heavy, making it quite unpleasant to drive in fast corners. But Max didn't complain about these factors back then because he was winning.
Now his complaints differ from those of the drivers of Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren, who are at the front of the pack. So his disappointment is quite natural and understandable. He has already achieved most of what most drivers dream of – Max didn't just win the title; he did it four times. And at some point, he found himself in a situation where he no longer has anything to strive for in Formula 1.
He has already done everything he aimed for. Perhaps he will want to set new records, but knowing Max and other successful drivers, I can say that at some point, they all start wanting to do what brings a smile.
I completely understand why driving at the Nürburgring brings a smile to his face. I have driven a hundred laps on the "North Loop" in the simulator and want to race in a real competition one day. But right now, my goal is to become the Formula 1 champion. If I have four titles, then I will probably strive for the same things Max is aiming for.
He is at a different stage of his career now. And I think he can be understood if he decides to stay, and he can be understood if he decides to leave."
