If you happen to be on Interstate 80 near the Mississippi River, make sure to visit the Iowa 80 truck stop, claimed to be the largest in the world. Located in Walcott, this truck stop features a large museum filled with vintage trucks that is set to expand even further.

According to the Quad Cities Business Journal, the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum has just begun a 25,000-square-foot expansion, which will increase the total space to 121,000 square feet upon completion. The owners of the truck stop anticipate that the construction will be finished by this fall, and it will not disrupt the operating hours during the process.

The museum showcases a wide array of trucking history, from various vehicles to signage, but the current facility lacks space for the entire collection. Some of the trucks that Iowa 80 plans to display for the first time include four Sterlings from the 1920s to the 1940s, recently added in 2024, and a newly restored 1948 Mack EWSQ armored truck from Wells Fargo.

“The collection of trucks and trucking memorabilia has outgrown the current facility,” remarked Lee Meier, marketing manager of Iowa 80 Group, the owner of the truck stop, in an interview with the Quad Cities Business Journal when the expansion was announced last December. With Iowa 80 itself occupying a 220-acre site, there is ample room for the museum to expand.

Opened in 2008 and last expanded in 2021, the museum is centered around the collection of Bill Moon, who established Iowa 80 in 1964. Moon began his collection in the 1980s with the intention of creating a museum for public display, but he unfortunately passed away before the project was realized. His family completed it in his honor and continues to manage Iowa 80.

Currently, over 100 vehicles are on display, ranging from an 1890 horse-drawn wagon to a 1996 Freightliner COE tractor. Some notable pieces include the 1978 Kenworth Bandag Bandit Bonneville speed record rig and a 1911 Walker Electric Model 43, highlighting that electric trucks have been around for quite some time. Even if you're not a truck enthusiast, it seems like a wonderful place to stop and take a break during a long journey.
