If you're traveling along Interstate 80 near the Mississippi River, the Iowa 80 truck stop is a must-visit location. Situated in Walcott, it is advertised as the largest truck stop in the world and features a substantial museum filled with vintage trucks that is set to expand.

According to the Quad Cities Business Journal, the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum has begun construction on a 25,000-square-foot expansion, which will bring its total area to 121,000 square feet once completed. The owners of the truck stop expect the construction to wrap up by this fall, and it will not interfere with operating hours during the process.

The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum showcases various aspects of trucking history, including numerous vehicles, signage, and more, but the existing facility is lacking space for the entire collection. Among the new displays planned are four Sterlings from the 1920s to 1940s, which were added to the collection in 2024, as well as a recently restored 1948 Mack EWSQ armored truck from Wells Fargo.

“The collection of trucks and trucking memorabilia has surpassed the capacity of the current facility,” stated Lee Meier, marketing manager of Iowa 80 Group, the truck stop’s owner, in an interview with the Quad Cities Business Journal when the expansion was revealed last December. Iowa 80 occupies a 220-acre site, allowing ample opportunity for the museum to expand.

The museum, which opened in 2008 and last expanded in 2021, centers around the collection of Bill Moon, the founder of Iowa 80, established in 1964. Moon began his collection in the 1980s with the intention of creating a museum to publicly exhibit it, but he passed away before realizing his vision. His family completed the project in his honor, and they continue to manage Iowa 80.

Currently, over 100 vehicles are on display, from an 1890 horse-drawn wagon to a 1996 Freightliner COE tractor. Highlights include the 1978 Kenworth Bandag Bandit Bonneville speed record rig and a 1911 Walker Electric Model 43, illustrating that electric trucks are not a new concept. Even if you're not a truck driver, it's a fantastic spot to stop and stretch during a long drive.
