Horner: I was invited to the MotoGP race by people from Liberty.
Christian Horner appeared in the paddock of the track in Jerez, Spain, on Saturday, where the fourth round of the MotoGP season is taking place this weekend, immediately attracting the attention of the press and sparking a wave of rumors, which we reported on.
But the former head of Red Bull Racing decided to explain the purpose of his visit himself, which he did in an interview with the British television channel TNT Sports: "You see, I have plenty of time, and the people from MotoGP and Liberty Media invited me to come here and take a look, as I have always loved motorsport.
Although, I think the last time I was at a MotoGP event was in 2005 in Estoril. In general, I’m interested in being here, seeing how things are going in this championship, and how it is developing. Of course, now it has common owners with Formula 1, so I’m happy to meet the riders and teams and feel this atmosphere of shared enthusiasm."
When Suzi Perry, a well-known British presenter, directly asked Horner if he had any plans to become the owner of one of the MotoGP teams, given that he spent quite a bit of time in the Honda garages, Horner, with his characteristic slyness, smirked and said:
"I just came to learn more about this championship, to better understand this technical sport, something I didn’t have time for before.
What I see, I like, and various kinds of speculation are inevitable and always arise. Speaking of the people from Honda, it’s clear that I’ve known them since those happy times when I worked in Formula 1. Although it seems that now they are facing some difficulties..."
Honda is facing difficulties in MotoGP as well: at one time, when the Spanish rider Marc Marquez was racing for this team, he won title after title, but that period ended in 2019. Since then, the balance of power in the championship has changed, and for the last four years, riders on Ducati motorcycles have dominated.
Last year, Marquez won his ninth title, now as a rider for the factory team of this Italian manufacturer. And in 2026, the Italian Marco Bezzecchi, racing for Aprilia Racing, won all three already held Grands Prix, with his teammate Jorge Martin in second place in the individual standings, while the best Honda rider, Luca Marini, is only in tenth place.
