Russell downplays the pressure of a 'one shot' title as Antonelli gains prominence.

George Russell is adamant that he doesn't view 2026 as his sole opportunity for a world title, despite increasing pressure at Mercedes. The team has showcased a dominant car this season, yet the Brit has been surpassed in the standings by 19-year-old teammate Kimi Antonelli after three races. Nevertheless, Russell remains composed regarding his chances.

"I believe there will be multiple opportunities," he told CNN. "It's quite uncommon for anyone in any field, when striving to achieve a specific goal, to only have one chance. You want to cherish every moment, not take anything for granted, and aim to make the most of it. I’m hoping this won’t be just my one and only chance. I'm aiming for success this year."

The impressive progress of Antonelli has caught the attention of the 28-year-old. "Kimi’s an excellent driver," Russell remarked. "I had a good insight into his talent and speed throughout last year. His start to this season has been nothing short of a dream."

Nonetheless, he emphasized that the title battle is just beginning. "I know what I'm capable of, and no championship is decided within three races, so there’s still a long way to go. We can’t underestimate these three races. It doesn't alter how I approach my work."

Russell also stated that he won't change his strategy in what could become a heated intra-team rivalry. "That's not how I handle my business," he replied when asked about employing gamesmanship. "I know who I am. I understand my abilities in the race car, and I don’t need to resort to those tactics to succeed."

Regarding the contentious 2026 regulations, Russell maintains a more measured stance compared to some competitors. "From a neutral standpoint, the racing has been quite thrilling, and we just need to ensure that qualifying is more enjoyable and less strategic for the drivers," he noted. "Ultimately, we are only three races into a new set of regulations, so we have to allow it some time."

As the season prepares to continue in Miami after a disrupted schedule, Russell is clear about his primary objective. "The goal is to return to the top step of the podium," he stated.
