The McLaren team put on a spectacular show on the streets of Miami.
The McLaren team organized a vibrant racing show ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, featuring stars of Formula 1 from different years. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were joined by Mika Hakkinen and Emerson Fittipaldi, all of whom drove McLaren cars that have left a significant mark in the history of world motorsport.
The Miami event was supposed to be the milestone, 1000th race for McLaren in Formula 1, and the team had long been preparing for this occasion, but due to the extremely complicated international situation, the Middle Eastern Grands Prix had to be canceled, meaning this historic milestone will only be reached in June. Nevertheless, the large-scale McLaren Racing Live show in Miami was not canceled.
"Of course, we expected to celebrate here," Lando confirmed in an interview with Reuters before getting behind the wheel of the MCL60, the 2023 car, and heading out onto the improvised track laid out on the streets of Coconut Grove. "I’m happy to play my small part in this show, as today the audience sees all these historic cars and drivers who have raced for McLaren. This is an important event for us, and I feel real pride."
79-year-old Emerson Fittipaldi, the first driver to become world champion with McLaren in 1974, drove the M23 yesterday, similar to the one James Hunt used to win the title in 1976.
Mika Hakkinen returned to the MP4-14, with which he won his second title in 1999, while Bruno Senna drove the MP4/6 – the car in which Ayrton Senna, his uncle, became world champion for the third time in 1991. The distinction of this historic car is not only that it is equipped with a manual transmission but also a 3.5-liter 12-cylinder Honda engine, the "voice" of which is hard to compare to the sound of modern hybrid power units.
Oscar Piastri was entrusted with bringing the McLaren MP4/23 to the streets of Miami, the car with which Lewis Hamilton won his first title in 2008, but the Australian driver spoke about something else, "It's really great to be here alongside champions from past years, even just to chat with them."
"It’s nice that so many people have gathered here, and we all had a bit of fun, which is good too," Lando added. "Usually, we have to be completely serious and drive normally, as we don’t do 'donuts' on the track or anything like that.
When I won the championship last year, I wasn’t even allowed to do 'donuts', so now I’m glad I have this opportunity, and overall the day is going great."
It was McLaren drivers who won the Miami Grand Prix in the previous two years – Norris stood atop the podium at the Florida track in 2024, and his teammate repeated this in 2025. However, the team's performance at the beginning of this season, when Formula 1 transitioned to new generation cars, has not been as successful, so Oscar preferred to refrain from making predictions:
"I think last year and even the year before we had quite a big advantage on such tracks, but this year we don’t, so let’s see how things develop.
I believe a lot can happen this weekend, including changes in the weather, and the task is to handle all of this better than our competitors. If we manage to do that, then there will be some opportunities to finish higher than we probably should."
