"We understand the dynamics of this situation."

Zak Brown and Laurent Mekies engaged in discussions in Miami to ease the tensions regarding Gianpiero Lambiase’s future. The conflict intensified after Mekies, head of Red Bull, suggested that Lambiase—who is expected to join McLaren in 2028—could eventually become team principal, which provoked a public rebuttal from Brown. The McLaren CEO implied that Lambiase’s situation might become awkward well before his contract expires in 2028. "We understand how this works," Brown remarked. "At some stage, it could feel uneasy having someone who is known to be heading to a competitor."

"If someone wants to leave my team, I’ve never viewed the situation as one where people steal from each other, like drivers or sponsors. You either lose them or they become interested in something else. So, the end of 2028 is when his contract concludes—we’ll wait if necessary." However, he also indicated that an earlier transfer could be possible. "If there’s an opportunity to act sooner, we are certainly open to that."

"It just creates discomfort, right? If I had someone in my racing team who I knew was on their way out, teams start to limit sharing any information he might have." "That’s just how it operates, so we’ll have to see how it unfolds." According to De Telegraaf, the two team leaders met in the paddock to resolve the escalating dispute. Mekies confirmed the constructive nature of their conversation. "We frequently communicate with Zak and my other colleagues," he stated. "Certainly, none of us wanted this to turn into a back-and-forth, and we had a positive discussion as we always do, and now we move forward."

He also highlighted Red Bull’s overarching goal of talent retention. "We don't want to shy away from acknowledging that we have lost some talents—it's a reality—and this has been the case for the past three or four years," Mekies noted. "Our top priority is to ensure that we build the capacity to keep, nurture, and attract the best talent in the pitlane." Despite their public disagreements, both parties minimized the prospect of ongoing tension. "There might have been a slight misunderstanding, but I believe there is a lot of respect for him," Brown mentioned regarding Mekies. "Absolutely."
