British racing driver Katherine Legge is poised to make history as the first woman to attempt the infamous “Double.” On Memorial Day Weekend, Legge will start her Sunday in Indianapolis by participating in the Indy 500, followed by a swift flight to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR event.
If she succeeds—and I’m definitely cheering her on—she will cover a total of 1,100 grueling racing miles. To achieve this, she must finish the Indy 500 without significant delays that could disrupt her travel plans. After the race, she will need to take a helicopter from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to one of the two nearby airports, board a private flight to Charlotte, and then take another helicopter to the NASCAR venue, ensuring she arrives on time for the driver’s meeting and the subsequent start of the race.
“Very few drivers ever get the chance to attempt ‘The Double,’ and I do not take that opportunity lightly,” Legge stated during the announcement. “This challenge is about pushing past perceived limits, believing in yourself, taking risks, and striving to do something extraordinary. I am incredibly thankful to e.l.f. for supporting what this moment represents and for fostering a community around it.”
As I previously mentioned when Legge was announced for the Indy 500 last month, cosmetics brand e.l.f. will serve as her primary sponsor, promoting the message that when “women are granted access to realms traditionally closed to them,” anything is achievable.
“At e.l.f., we believe that culture progresses when more women are given the chance to tell their stories, break barriers, and redefine possibilities,” said Patrick O’Keefe, CMO of e.l.f. Beauty. “Katherine’s attempt at ‘The Double’ exemplifies what empowering legendary females looks like in practice—supporting women who challenge boundaries and inspire the next generation to aim even higher. Together, we are creating experiences that welcome our community into that journey and remind everyone that the road becomes broader when women are in control.”
Only five drivers have attempted The Double to date: the late John Andretti in 1994, Robby Gordon in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004, Tony Stewart in 1999 and 2001, Kurt Busch in 2014, and most recently, Kyle Larson in 2024 and 2025. Only Tony Stewart successfully completed all 1,100 miles in one day. Janet Guthrie announced her intention to attempt The Double in 1976 but did not qualify for the Indy 500.
