10 years since Max Verstappen's first victory
How quickly time flies. It has been exactly ten years since Max Verstappen replaced Daniil Kvyat at Red Bull Racing – and ten years since his first victory.
After the race in Sochi, Red Bull made what seemed like a difficult decision at the time. Helmut Marko promised Jos Verstappen the shortest path to success in Formula 1 for his son, and as soon as the opportunity arose, he moved him from Toro Rosso to the "main team."
Daniil Kvyat had a poor performance in Sochi, crashing into Sebastian Vettel at the start, which led the German to come to Red Bull for explanations. Starting eighth, Daniil finished 15th at his home track, and the next race was already with Toro Rosso, while Max Verstappen was with Red Bull Racing.
May 15, 2016. The Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. Max was very lucky that day. Lewis Hamilton started from pole, Nico Rosberg began the race second, but overtook his teammate at the first corner, attacked – and they both ended up in the gravel.
Verstappen started fourth and after the Mercedes drivers retired, he was in second place, then Ricciardo had a left rear tire blowout – and Max confidently brought the race to victory, becoming the youngest race winner in Formula 1 history. This record still stands – 18 years, 7 months, and 15 days.
