The VW ID Buzz Took a Year Break and Returned With a Mattress.
The latest car updates and evaluations, no fluff.
The demise of the electric Volkswagen ID Buzz was clearly overstated and didn't last long. The electric van is making a comeback.
On Thursday, Volkswagen unveiled the 2027 ID Buzz, signaling the model's return after a break during the 2026 model year in the U.S. market, featuring a new trim selection and a significant addition: a setup for those wishing to camp in their bus.
The return of the ID Buzz introduces the new Tourer 4Motion trim. This variant is based on the Euro-spec "Good Night Package" for our market. Choosing the Tourer trim includes a fold-out mattress with a platform for resting, window blinds, front window ventilation panels, and Overnight Mode software that Volkswagen claims will adjust both interior and exterior functions for overnight use. Although, we will have to wait for more specific details on how this works.
Also, the Tourer comes with an exterior table and chairs (likely VW-branded) for camping enthusiasts who may not already own these essentials.
The Tourer trim includes features like a standard retractable tow hitch, captain's chairs, an electrochromic roof, a surround-view camera system, and 20-inch dark graphite wheels with black discs.
This new Tourer trim fits into the updated trim structure between the mid-tier Pro S 4Motion and the fully equipped Pro S Plus 4Motion, the latter now offering 21-inch wheels. A base Pro S RWD serves as the starting point of the lineup. All ID Buzz models will now include a Tesla-like NACS charging port.

Volkswagen addressed complaints regarding the absence of two-tone paint options and has fully embraced the retro design elements. Every ID Buzz will now come with a two-tone paint scheme. In addition, a Candy White over Cherry Red color option with white wheels, reminiscent of the classic Type 2 Microbus palette, has been introduced.
Volkswagen has yet to reveal pricing or driving range for the 2027 ID Buzz, nor have they specified when the electric bus will reappear in showrooms.
It truly was a significant oversight that the VW ID Buzz did not debut with the Tourer option allowing owners to easily sleep and camp in their electric van from the start, but it's good to see VW has rectified this. Better late than never, I suppose.
