Toto Wolff: I have mixed emotions
Team principal of Mercedes Toto Wolff has mixed feelings after the race in Canada – one of his drivers won, while the other retired, but he is pleased with the active battle between them.
Toto Wolff: “I have mixed emotions. I am very happy for one of our drivers and very sorry about what happened to the other. But that’s racing.
In any case, Kimi did an excellent job and deserved to win, while George was leading the race and could have won until he had issues with his car. It was interesting to watch their battle, but we regret that we couldn’t secure a winning double.
Every time they fought on the track, we wanted to intervene, to say that enough is enough, as we were losing time to Verstappen behind, but in the next couple of laps, the gap increased again.
As long as we maintained that gap, it was interesting to watch them, but it’s clear that in such a situation, anything can go wrong, and not because one car wants to crash into the other, but simply because as a result of an incident, both could retire.
They have completely identical cars. The one who attacked and the one who defended had all the necessary tools. When a team can afford such a battle – it’s a kind of luxury.
I hope we can continue in the same spirit, but we cannot ignore other factors. If we were at risk of losing position, we would definitely intervene and say, ‘Guys, let’s not waste so much time fighting each other.’”
