Briatore observes fresh potential in Colapinto following Alpine's advancements.
Franco Colapinto states that he is finally starting to feel at ease at Alpine. The 22-year-old Argentine joined Alpine last year amid significant expectations following his remarkable substitute performances for Williams in 2024, which ultimately led to the exits of both Logan Sargeant and Jack Doohan from Formula 1. However, after securing a full-time position at Alpine, Colapinto often faced challenges alongside his seasoned teammate, Pierre Gasly.
That scenario took a turn in Canada. After a notable appearance at a roadshow in Buenos Aires, where he met football legend Lionel Messi, Colapinto delivered one of his most impressive weekends in Montreal. Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore even joked, "Maybe I’ll have to send him to Buenos Aires every week."
Colapinto mentioned that both the improvements in Alpine’s car and his increasing personal confidence are finally coming together. "Since Miami, it's been clear that the changes made at the factory have helped me significantly. Additionally, I’m feeling more competitive," he told DAZN. The Argentine acknowledged that the start of the season was challenging, partly due to the unfamiliarity of many circuits to him. "Yes, I do feel that I'm a bit more relaxed," he noted. "Knowing the circuits helps me during a sprint weekend to understand what I need to do. The first half of the year was tough because I wasn’t familiar with the circuits, which was a disadvantage."
He also cautioned his competitors, asserting: "Now we’re going to be more aggressive." Colapinto mentioned that his primary challenge initially was grasping why he wasn't matching Gasly’s pace. "With the car, it’s straightforward to identify what isn’t functioning," he explained. "But when confidence is lacking, it becomes a bit more complicated." "Gradually, we’re discovering why I didn’t have Pierre’s speed."
The improving atmosphere within Alpine is also boosting morale, especially after the disappointing 2025 season that left the team struggling at the back of the grid. "It’s going to be an intense year," Colapinto noted. "The environment at the factory is inspiring—everyone is highly motivated. I'm thrilled to contribute by scoring points."
Gasly publicly commended his younger teammate's attitude and growth. "He’s a great guy," the Frenchman remarked. "I appreciate his mindset. He remains very composed." Gasly believes that both drivers are now collaboratively steering Alpine in the same technical direction. "I think we make a strong team. We share similar feelings and are guiding the team together. Of course, he has a bit less experience, but he consistently comes with the right attitude."
Gasly highlighted Colapinto’s strong performance as a significant breakthrough. "He had a fantastic race in Miami," he said. "Scoring points with both cars is crucial because it’s going to be a lengthy championship. Ultimately, every point counts."
