Briatore observes a renewed Colapinto following Alpine's advancements.
Franco Colapinto expresses that he is starting to feel at ease with Alpine. The 22-year-old Argentine joined Alpine last year amid significant expectations following his impressive substitute performances for Williams in 2024, which eventually led to Logan Sargeant and Jack Doohan leaving Formula 1. However, since earning the full-time Alpine seat, Colapinto has often faced challenges competing against his experienced teammate Pierre Gasly.
That narrative shifted in Canada. After participating in a major roadshow in Buenos Aires, where he met football legend Lionel Messi, Colapinto delivered one of his best weekends in Montreal. Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore even joked afterward, "Maybe I’ll have to send him to Buenos Aires every week."
Colapinto states that the improvements in Alpine’s car, along with his increasing personal confidence, are finally coming together. "Since Miami, it’s been clear that the changes made at the factory have greatly benefited me. Additionally, I'm feeling more competitive," he told DAZN. He acknowledged that the beginning of the season was complicated, in part due to his lack of familiarity with many circuits. "Yes, I feel that I relax a bit more," he noted. "Knowing the circuits helps me during a sprint weekend to understand what I need to do. The first half of the year was tough because of my unfamiliarity with the tracks, which was a disadvantage."
He also warned his competitors, saying, "Now we’re going to be more assertive." Colapinto indicated that the initial challenge was comprehending why he couldn’t match Gasly’s speed. "With the car, it’s easy to identify what’s not right," he explained. "But lacking confidence makes it a bit more challenging." "Gradually, we’re uncovering why I didn’t have Pierre’s speed."
The improving environment within Alpine is also boosting morale after the team's dismal 2025 season left them struggling at the back. "It’s going to be an intense year," Colapinto mentioned. "The atmosphere at the factory is inspiring—everyone is highly motivated. I’m very pleased to contribute back with points."
Gasly similarly commended his younger teammate's mindset and progress. "He’s a great guy," the Frenchman remarked. "I appreciate his attitude; he remains very calm." Gasly believes that both are aligning to drive Alpine in the same technical direction. "I think we form a solid team. We share similar feelings and guide the team in the same way. Of course, he has a bit less experience, but he consistently approaches it with the right attitude."
Gasly highlighted Colapinto’s strong performance as a significant breakthrough. "He delivered an excellent race in Miami," he noted. "It’s crucial to score points with both cars, as the championship is very long. Ultimately, every point counts."
