Vowles is optimistic that Sainz and Albon will remain with Williams.
Williams team principal James Vowles has downplayed the increasing speculation surrounding the driver market, affirming that both Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon remain dedicated to the team's long-term plans. With both drivers seemingly in the last year of their current contracts and the Formula 1 silly season gaining traction, there are concerns about the potential for either driver to be lured away.
However, Vowles asserts that both drivers are fully committed to Williams’ future, despite a challenging start to the 2026 season. "When it comes to the silly season and the rumors, speak to Alex and Carlos," Vowles stated. "They want to be part of this journey, and that’s all I can convey. My responsibility is to ensure they feel the same way."
This confidence comes even as Williams has faced setbacks this season after finishing as the fifth-best team in 2025. The season began with a car that was reportedly about 28 kilograms overweight, a figure that has since improved but remains above the target. Currently, Williams holds P8 in the constructors’ standings with only 7 points—six of which were scored by Sainz.
Nonetheless, Sainz remains hopeful. "After the struggles we faced over the winter, it was evident that we needed to acknowledge we’re still not at the level we should be in various aspects," Sainz commented in Montreal. "The team has taken swift actions to tackle these issues and recruit key personnel."
Vowles maintains that the team's recovery is in progress. "I want to demonstrate that we have the capability to rebound and enhance our performance significantly, which is exactly what we are doing now," he remarked. "The backing from our board is crucial to me as it signifies that all the systems and foundational principles we’ve established are still valid."
Additionally, the Briton indicated that merely aiming for sporadic Q3 appearances will not suffice to satisfy either driver. "They are not here, nor do they care about just making it into Q3," Vowles said. "They want us to show that we have the resources to solve problems effectively when they arise. I believe we are on the right path, but we have yet to do enough."
