Carlos Sainz: F1 drivers cannot be replaced by robots.

During the break between the stages of the season, Carlos Sainz flew to Japan, where he visited the Tokyo factory of the engineering conglomerate Komatsu, one of Williams' main sponsors. From the video materials shot during this visit, the team's press service edited a video titled "55 Questions for Carlos Sainz."

There’s no point in reproducing everything – for example, "How was the flight?", "When did you first visit Japan?" or "Which Komatsu excavator do you like the most?" – but let's highlight those that deserve attention in one way or another.

Question: Do you think robots will ever replace Formula 1 drivers?

Carlos Sainz: No. I don’t think we can be replaced by robots. In our field, the result is important, and it also checks who is the bravest, the fastest. But in the field of engineering, this is probably possible in the future.

Question: How difficult is it for Formula 1 teams to keep up with the latest technological trends every year, given that technology is becoming increasingly complex?

Carlos Sainz: I see how much attention Formula 1 teams pay to the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in all the projects we are involved in, and now a lot depends on who can master it faster and better and start applying it effectively.

Question: But will AI ever take away the work of drivers?

Carlos Sainz: No, my job will never be entrusted to it. At least, not in my lifetime.

Question: If you had the opportunity to use as many robots as you wanted in certain areas, what would you assign them to do?

Carlos Sainz: First of all, cooking, although I personally enjoy spending time in the kitchen. But mainly I would assign robots to do just that.

Question: Maybe they could be used in golf as caddies?

Carlos Sainz: No, I prefer it to be a person with whom I have a good relationship. It’s important that they understand golf and the emotional side of the sport. Overall, everything there is tied to personal relationships and emotions – I don’t think robots will ever be able to replace that.

Question: Then what Japanese dish would you assign to a robot chef?

Carlos Sainz: If he can start by making sushi with some good fish, as they do in Japan, that would be a nice appetizer. Then he could be tasked with making udon noodles, and for the main course – a quality wagyu steak. And ice cream for dessert. Last night I ate quite a lot of Japanese mochi ice cream.

Question: Are you interested in space travel? Would you like to fly to the moon?

Carlos Sainz: I am indeed interested in space, for example, when I was flying to Japan, I watched the movie "The Martian" with Matt Damon on the plane. Such films always spark interest in space travel, the issue of time dilation in space journeys, and the change in the perception of time. All of this fascinates and captivates me!

Question: Do you have a favorite science fiction movie?

Carlos Sainz: I’m not very interested in science fiction, but I do have a favorite movie – it’s "Interstellar." However, "The Martian" is also good.

Question: If you had to assemble a team of four people for a flight to the Moon, who would you take with you?

Carlos Sainz: I would invite the three best engineers and pilots in the world.

Question: So, you wouldn’t take friends on such a flight?

      Carlos Sainz: No!

Question: And what if you had to go to Mars for about twenty years?

Carlos Sainz: No, no, you should only take those who can help you return to Earth.
