Smedli: Imagine what Kimi will achieve in about six years.
We reported that Rob Smedley speaks highly of Kimi Antonelli after the Miami Grand Prix. But after yet another victory for the 19-year-old Mercedes driver, now in Canada, the British engineer, who once worked at Williams and Ferrari, stated that such talents appear in Formula 1 very rarely.
"You can see how close Kimi is to the limits of the car's capabilities," Smedley said while participating in the High Performance podcast. "Things happen very quickly on the track, but you can see what braking points he chooses, how he maximizes the car's performance, how precisely he operates the steering wheel, how the car responds to him, and how consistently he maintains his trajectory. He drives the same way on every lap.
For a driver with so little experience in Formula 1, he is just very good. Try to imagine what Antonelli will achieve in six years when he reaches his peak skill – I think we are dealing with a talent that appears in the championship only once in a generation. I truly believe that this is not an exaggeration – he is that good."
After five races of the season, in which Kimi Antonelli has won four, he leads the championship and has already 43 points more than George Russell. His more experienced teammate was unlucky last Sunday – the car broke down on the 29th lap of the race while George was in the lead.
