Verstappen: My daughter will be able to decide for herself what to do.
Max Verstappen has made it clear that it is becoming increasingly difficult for him to be away from his family for long periods when he has to fly to races, and this is another aspect of the current stage of life for the four-time world champion, now that he has become a father.
Just over a year ago, he and Kelly Piquet welcomed their daughter Lily, an event that took place before the Miami Grand Prix, which is why the Red Bull Racing driver flew to Florida a day later that weekend. Naturally, he now wants to spend as much time at home as possible.
For the recent Canadian Grand Prix, he also flew out only on Wednesday, whereas in previous seasons he would have done so at least a day earlier.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf about his experience in the first year of fatherhood, Max said: "Personally, I have always believed that the most important thing is to remain true to yourself. Therefore, I think Lily will be able to fully decide for herself what she wants to do in the future, what she likes, and what she doesn't.
There are many parents who pressure their children, trying to push them towards a certain direction, including in sports. But that shouldn't be done. I think you can suggest to a child to engage in a particular sport, but ultimately, children should choose for themselves what they want to do.
Overall, sports are a beneficial activity. They promote health and help shield from negative influences on the street. The likelihood of a person starting to do something foolish decreases. Moreover, it is important for a child to maintain good relationships with their family.
And sometimes, it is necessary to remember that no one is eternal. And one must be sensitive to people, especially those who are close to you."
