Esteban Ocon joined the debate about the greatest drivers.
The discussion about which of the great drivers deserves to be placed at the top of the ranking of the best can go on indefinitely, but in any case, the number of titles is one of the main indicators. Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton have both become world champions seven times, however, the British driver has more wins (105 to 91), pole positions (104 to 68), and podiums (204 to 155).
Of course, different eras in the history of Formula 1 cannot be directly compared, but the names of Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna will always be in the list of the greatest drivers, and among our contemporaries, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, and Max Verstappen will be included.
The criteria for evaluation can vary, which is why the discussion will be eternal, but recently Esteban Ocon joined in and also shared his opinion – his words are quoted by Sport Bible:
“For example, it’s hard to compare Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher. At one point, they raced in Formula 1 in the same era, but drove for different teams. Without a doubt, Lewis should be considered one of the greatest drivers of all time and the best of our time. I think we have to agree with this because during this period, no one has achieved more than he has.”
On one hand, the French Haas F1 driver is right, on the other hand, Hamilton is currently going through a difficult moment in his career, although his second season at Ferrari is already going better. Last year, he did not finish on the podium at any Grand Prix, except for winning the sprint in China, and in 2026 he has already finished in the top three twice, including a week ago in Canada.
Moreover, it seems he has adapted better than Charles Leclerc to the features of the SF-26, Ferrari's new car, and it will be very interesting to see how events unfold in the remaining 16 races of the season. In any case, if we talk about the Scuderia drivers, the most titled among them will remain Michael Schumacher for a long time, who became world champion five times from 2000 to 2004.
However, he achieved this for the first time only in his fifth year with Ferrari, but the likelihood that Hamilton has such a resource of time is quite low.
