Dromo and Tilke are arguing in court about the track in Madrid.
The Spanish Grand Prix this year will not take place in Barcelona, but on a new city circuit in Madrid, where construction has been plagued by various problems from the very beginning, and now also by lawsuits.
The circuit was designed by Dromo, but then the parties parted ways, and now the architectural firm of Hermann Tilke is responsible for the construction. Dromo's lawyers have sued Tilke, accusing them of using copyrighted documents and drawings without proper permission.
An expert appointed by the court confirmed that the Tilke files contained Dromo materials either in whole or in part. After reviewing the lawsuit, the Cologne court temporarily prohibited Tilke from using certain documents from the circuit project.
Dromo claims that the configuration of the circuit is the result of numerous internal design decisions and development stages, and insists on financial compensation.
Ilario Zaffelli, founder of Dromo: "Our design, our drawings, models, and methodology were provided to the organizers under certain conditions. If these materials are now used for the construction, modification, promotion, or commercial exploitation of the Madrid Grand Prix without adhering to these conditions, the issue is not a sporting one: it is a legal one.
Our assessment is that only the termination of the contract generates amounts exceeding 6 million euros. We do not seek to block construction. We want those who use Dromo's work to have the appropriately paid right to do so."
