Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has frequently expressed to me over the years that he doesn’t think Americans are opposed to electric vehicles (EVs). Instead, he suggests that the lack of appealing options in the EV market is the real issue. While I’m uncertain if that notion holds true, one thing is clear: I constantly receive inquiries from enthusiasts eager to know when the Rivian R3X will be available. These inquiries come from a diverse range of people who typically prefer gas vehicles.

During an exclusive interview in Park City, Utah, for the latest episode of The Drivecast, when asked about the R3X's release, Rivian's Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe remarked, "they’ll come," followed quickly by, "it’s a couple of years away."

You can listen to the entire discussion starting from the point where Scaringe confirms the R3X is coming and provides a timeline.

Scaringe stated, “We have, well, Rivian has a very clear timeline in mind,” but he also mentioned, “We just haven’t announced it yet.”

Discussions across social media platforms like Threads, Bluesky, X, and Reddit have many people expressing sentiments like, “I hope Rivian lasts long enough for the R3X to arrive.”

Whether Scaringe’s straightforward assurance that the R3X is on the way is enough to ease those concerns remains uncertain. However, he did affirm, “But they’ll come. Yeah, they’re coming.”

It’s evident that Rivian has not specifically committed to a precise arrival date for the R3X. Nonetheless, we received a hopeful clue as Scaringe noted, “We just haven’t announced the date. You know, it’s a couple of years away.”

A couple indicates two years, which would coincide with the opening of the Georgia factory aimed at increasing production of both the mass-market R2, which is currently launching, and the even more affordable R3.

So far, unlike many automakers, Rivian has successfully delivered every product on schedule, on budget, and as promised, albeit not all features. This is an impressive accomplishment. Now, we have a target timeline for the R3X. Mark your calendars.
