RJ Scaringe, CEO of Rivian, has repeatedly expressed his view that Americans are not opposed to electric vehicles (EVs). Instead, he suggests that the options available in the EV market are currently limited and not compelling enough. While I'm uncertain about the accuracy of this theory, it’s clear that the demand for information on the Rivian R3X is high, with inquiries coming from a diverse group of gas-loving car enthusiasts.
During an exclusive interview in Park City, Utah, on the latest episode of The Drivecast, Scaringe responded to a question about the R3X's arrival by stating, “they’ll come,” followed shortly by, “it’s a couple of years away.”
You can listen to the full discussion beginning at the point where Scaringe confirms the R3X is indeed in the works and reveals a timeline below.
Scaringe remarked, “We have a really clear idea on timeline,” but added, “We just haven’t announced it yet.”
Online conversations on platforms like Threads, Bluesky, X, and Reddit are buzzing with comments at the heart of this anticipation, such as, “I hope Rivian lasts long enough for the R3X to arrive.”
Whether Scaringe's firm assurance that the R3X is forthcoming will soothe concerns remains to be seen. Nonetheless, he reiterated, “But they’ll come. Yeah, they’re coming.”
It’s noticeable that Rivian has yet to specify when the R3X will actually be released. However, there is a hint of optimism as Scaringe said, “We just haven’t announced the date. You know, it’s a couple of years away.”
"Couple" refers to two, which aligns with the timeline for the Georgia factory to begin production of both the mass-market R2, which is currently launching, and the more affordable R3.
So far, unlike many other automakers, Rivian has successfully delivered all its products—though not every feature—pretty much on schedule, within budget, and as promised. This is a remarkable accomplishment. Now, we have a timeline for the R3X, so mark your calendars.
