      Rivian is setting its sights on expanding its charging network, aiming to establish one of the largest infrastructures in the U.S., according to CEO RJ Scaringe.

      While current expansion is steady, it's not rapid. The pace will quicken with the introduction of the power cabinet 2.0.

      Scaringe notes that competition and reliability are essential, stressing the importance of having multiple dependable charging networks.

      Significant growth is anticipated over the next few years, especially linked to new product launches from Rivian’s Georgia facility.

      In summary, Rivian is strategically planning to enhance its charging network, targeting substantial growth in the upcoming years to compete with Tesla and bolster EV infrastructure.

      Electric car chargers are set to become increasingly utilized, making the expansion of charging networks crucial. Rivian recognizes this need and has outlined ambitious goals.

      In Park City, Utah, Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe, during an exclusive conversation on The Drivecast, stated, "Our aim is to be one of the largest [charging] networks in the United States."

      Scaringe reaffirmed his commitment to developing Rivian's charging network, indicating that the expansion is progressing at a linear pace as of now.

      Despite the launch of the more affordable R2 model, Rivian will not expedite the rollout of the RAN network, as per Scaringe. However, changes will come at some point in the future.

      “We currently have approximately 150 RAN locations, and that number will continue to grow. We'll see significant acceleration in our expansion once we introduce what we're calling our power cabinet 2.0. This upgrade will enhance all the power electronics used in the cabinets behind the charging dispensers. The reason we're waiting for a substantial ramp-up in growth is that the power cabinet 2.0 has been optimized for both cost and ease of installation," Scaringe explained.

      If this seems to align with the Rivian R2 concept in charging networks, Scaringe confirms that this is indeed correct. "That's exactly right. When planning the network expansion, we want to hold off on making a major investment until the right time. This timing will coincide with the launch of new products from our Georgia facility. This won’t happen in the immediate future; we expect gradual growth over the next two years, followed by a notable increase in our expansion pace. Our aim remains to be one of the largest networks in the U.S.," Scaringe added.

      Scaringe pointed out that while competition and diversity in charging options are beneficial, the key issue is ensuring that chargers are operational. "Currently, there are two networks with excellent uptime—Tesla’s, which is commendable, and ours. Tesla’s network is significantly larger, while ours represents about 4 or 5% of Tesla’s size. Ultimately, it will be crucial to have more than one excellent network in the U.S. We welcome the development of other networks, striving for widespread access to reliable charging with 99% uptime, though the rollout is taking longer than many anticipated, myself included," Scaringe commented.

      The timeline for widespread electric car chargers along interstates, akin to gas stations, is uncertain, but it will likely take several years before Rivian intensifies its commitment to its charging network. Following that, significant progress in charging availability is expected.
