This weekend features the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which is, for many, the highlight of the year. A full day filled with the world's most exciting racing cars on one of the premier tracks, as teams of drivers collaborate to etch their names into its prestigious history. Gran Turismo 7 is joining in on the celebrations with an update on Thursday that is primarily centered around this event, introducing four highly sought-after Le Mans Hypercars and a Porsche 911 Turbo safety car for good measure.
This week, we see the arrival of the 2023 Ferrari 499P, 2024 Porsche 963, 2025 Peugeot 9X8, and 2025 BMW M Hybrid V8 in GT7. This patch expands the game's collection of modern Le Mans prototypes to five when you include the 2021 Toyota GR010 Hybrid. After a series of new car packs featuring mild crossovers and some of the most unexpected selections, it’s refreshing to receive an update that emphasizes motorsport and completes an entire class of racing.
Historically, Gran Turismo has struggled to consistently represent various motorsport categories accurately. When Polyphony Digital introduces a race car from a specific series and timeframe, it often doesn’t include other vehicles from that group for competition. The game’s own categorization system aims to balance performance metrics to ensure fair competition among cars from different eras and disciplines, but it can be hit or miss, leaving motorsport purists uncomfortable seeing, for instance, a JGTC Toyota Supra competing against a modern GT3 Mercedes.
The excitement surrounding this update stems from its content and timing. Fans have requested these cars for years; Ferrari has triumphed in this event three times since the 499P made its debut. While it takes time to incorporate these vehicles into the game at the quality level Polyphony aspires to, it’s odd that a Honda CR-V made its appearance before any of these prototypes.
Considering this, the overall cost for this group of cars is likely to be high. For reference, the GR010 priced at 3 million credits in GT7 indicates that if Polyphony maintains the cost for the competitors, it would total 15 million to complete this category. This update will also introduce a variety of new events, and with three centered around Gr.1 race cars, we can only hope they offer good rewards.
