The president of the FIA suggests that BYD could be the suitable team for the 12th entry.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem has intensified speculation that the Chinese automotive powerhouse BYD might join Formula 1 as its twelfth and final team. The FIA president has consistently advocated for an expansion of the grid, a push that led to Cadillac's entry as the eleventh team in 2026. In light of growing rumors connecting BYD to a potential future involvement and recent high-level discussions at grand prix events, Ben Sulayem has expressed his enthusiasm for the idea of a Chinese team.

"It’s not merely about adding another team, but about introducing the right team," the FIA president stated to Germany’s DPA news agency in Le Mans. "And we see the right team in China."

Current regulations in Formula 1 permit the addition of a twelfth team, although there may still be resistance from existing competitors and Liberty Media-owned Formula One Management. Ben Sulayem expressed that a Chinese manufacturer would be his top choice if there were to be another expansion of the grid. "It was already clear that if there were to be another team, hopefully it will be one from China," he remarked.

Recently, BYD vice president Stella Li was reported to have had meetings with both Ben Sulayem and Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali during the Monaco GP weekend. Additionally, there have been links between this initiative and former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who was seen with BYD at the recent Cannes film festival.
