FIA president suggests that BYD is "the right team" for the 12th entry.
"We recognize the presence of the right team in China"
Mohammed Ben Sulayem has intensified speculation regarding the potential entry of Chinese automotive powerhouse BYD as the twelfth and final team in Formula 1. The FIA president has always advocated for an expanded grid, leading to Cadillac's inclusion as the eleventh team in 2026. Amidst rising rumors connecting BYD to a future participation and recent high-level discussions at grand prix events, Ben Sulayem has embraced the idea of a Chinese team.
"It's not merely about adding another team, but about incorporating the right team," the FIA president shared with Germany’s DPA news agency at Le Mans. "And we believe the right team is in China."
Current Formula 1 regulations permit the addition of a twelfth team, notwithstanding possible resistance from existing competitors and Liberty Media-owned Formula One Management. Ben Sulayem expressed a preference for a Chinese manufacturer should the grid expand once more. "It was already evident that if a new team were to emerge, we hope it would be one from China," he stated.
Recently, BYD vice president Stella Li allegedly met with both Ben Sulayem and Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend. There have also been reports suggesting that the project involves former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who was seen with BYD at the recent Cannes film festival.
