Vasseur: My job is to calm everyone down a little.
Frederic Vasseur, the head of the Ferrari team, is of course pleased with Lewis Hamilton's first victory behind the wheel of the red car, but he emphasizes that it is the result of the collective efforts made in Maranello over the past few months.
Frederic Vasseur: "Can we say that a dream has come true? I don't know, but it is definitely a wonderful day for the entire team, for Lewis, for everyone who works at the Ferrari base. For months they have been working at a crazy pace, and the victory is the best reward for all their efforts.
The last year and a half has been challenging; we have had some achievements and some failures, but today we won the race, fully controlling its course, and on Saturday we fought for pole position. We understood how important it was to manage tire wear, and Lewis acted perfectly, while we adjusted the strategy during the Grand Prix, and he increased the pace when we asked him to. He performed exceptionally well!
We employed an aggressive strategy, but when the car's speed is high enough to fight for victory, you can afford that. And the strategy was executed clearly, although we had been doing well in other races in this regard, but back then we were not capable of such an impressive pace, and those efforts were harder to notice.
But most importantly, there is complete trust between the drivers and the pit wall, and that has been a key aspect. As for mistakes, they are always possible. Charles Leclerc was unlucky and had to retire a few laps before the finish, but I have no doubt that in the upcoming races he will be fighting for victories alongside Lewis.
I believe we would have won this race even if the virtual safety car had not been deployed, although probably with a slightly smaller margin. But we were in a favorable position, as we received a fresh set of tires at that stage. However, I don't want to engage in calculations about how events could have unfolded under different scenarios. I think we were already in a very favorable situation.
We started the European part of the season excellently. Before Barcelona, we had two consecutive podiums – in Monaco and Canada, and here we proved that our car is fast enough to fight for pole. All of this is very positive.
At the same time, it is important to avoid assurances that we are already on the path to winning the championship. A few weeks ago, it could not be said that we had failed, and today we are not yet world champions. We must maintain the same approach we had before. My working methods will not change during the period between the races in Barcelona and Austria – simply because we have only won one race so far. I know how much work has been done at the team base, and I know how hard we are working.
Lewis is feeling joyful right now, the team is too, and my job is to calm everyone down a bit. Of course, a lot has been done this weekend to further strengthen his confidence, but in two weeks in Austria, we will have to start all over again."
