Vowles seeks discussions with Sainz as Audi speculation resurfaces.

James Vowles has emphasized that Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon are fully dedicated to Williams, despite recent rumors suggesting possible departures of both drivers. Veteran journalist Roger Benoit from the Swiss newspaper Blick has reported that Sainz is growing increasingly frustrated with Williams' unsatisfactory performance in the 2026 season and, "under pressure from his father," may consider a switch to Audi.

Audi, which has connections to Sainz’s renowned rally-driving father Carlos Sainz senior, initially showed interest in the 31-year-old when it took over Sauber two years ago, but Sainz ultimately decided to join Williams.

Blick has also indicated that Albon might be contemplating his own future. These speculations arise as Williams faces challenges in meeting expectations after finishing fifth in last year's constructors' championship. "We haven’t fulfilled our potential," Vowles admitted to Marca. "We made mistakes this winter."

The Williams team principal noted that the FW48 commenced the season with excessive weight and insufficient downforce, although upgrades are currently in the works. Despite the challenging season, Vowles expressed confidence in retaining both drivers. "If they were considering any other option, they would come and talk to me," he stated.

Vowles shared that he has had open and regular discussions with both drivers since identifying issues with the 2026 project. "With me, what you see is what you get," he explained. "I’ll communicate the bad news, but also the good."

At the same time, he acknowledged that any driver would likely evaluate external opportunities if a top seat became available. "They would be foolish to ignore their options if a seat opened up at Mercedes tomorrow," Vowles admitted. "But right now, they are 100 percent committed to Williams."

The Briton argued that Williams provides something distinct for both Sainz and Albon. "Alex and Carlos have already invested a significant amount of time in shaping Williams into the team they envision," he said. "It’s their team, and such an opportunity is not available anywhere else on the grid."

Vowles concluded: "I’m not concerned. My role is to demonstrate how we can swiftly address these issues and create an environment where they can compete for podiums again."
