Ecclestone supports Ben Sulayem in light of the FIA controversy.
"I am trying to think of something he did wrong."
Former Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone has expressed his support for controversial FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, asserting that the Emirati is performing "a fantastic job."
Ben Sulayem has faced increasing criticism in recent months, particularly after FIA members voted to eliminate term limits for office holders, which could enable him to serve as president beyond the previous maximum of 12 years. However, Ecclestone, who has collaborated closely with previous FIA presidents Jean-Marie Balestre, Max Mosley, and Jean Todt, finds little to complain about.
"I am trying to think of something he did wrong," remarked the 95-year-old. "It’s not an easy job to do what he does, and I believe he is working to make everything fairer and more modern. There are, however, a few things I hope he will address in the future."
Foremost among these is Ben Sulayem’s initiative to reintroduce naturally aspirated engines to Formula 1. A new rumor circulating in the Austrian GP paddock suggests that F1 might also revive mid-race refueling to help lighten the cars.
"A three-liter engine," Ecclestone said when asked what he would like to see come back. "It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s a V8, V10, or V12. I think everyone would welcome that. That would be the right choice. Max (Verstappen) was also right in his criticism."
Ecclestone also commended the FIA’s financial recovery under Ben Sulayem’s stewardship. "He had a tough job," he noted. "He inherited issues that he did not create himself and was therefore limited in his options. He figured out what worked and what didn’t, and I believe he did a fantastic job.
"Financially, he is guiding the FIA back to a position they should have reached much sooner. There’s no reason why the FIA shouldn’t be profitable. He is not doing this for personal benefit; he is simply striving to do what is best for the sport."
