Wolff: There's nothing good if drivers think too much!
In Austria, both Mercedes drivers stepped onto the podium, with George Russell securing his second victory of the season. Naturally, Toto Wolff, the head of the factory team of the Stuttgart concern, is very happy for his charges.
Toto Wolff: "From the end of yesterday's qualifying to the finish of today's race, George Russell performed simply perfectly. He was fast, worked well with the tires, kept his composure, and I am very happy for him.
He knows he is capable of excellent speed, but sometimes it’s enough to just drive normally and pilot calmly. And when drivers think too much, there’s nothing good in that! (laughs)
As we say, the best race is the one you drove the fastest. You don’t need to hold back the pace – just don’t destroy the rear tires. At the same time, we try to load the front tires more, and we succeeded today. You don’t need to think about tactics, about how far ahead you are of your pursuers – you just need to attack, fully utilizing the car's capabilities – that’s exactly how George acted.
And I am very proud of Kimi Antonelli! In the early laps, he really wanted to lay the groundwork for another victory, for which he paid a certain price, but I appreciate his enthusiasm. He just attacks – we need a driver like that who constantly attacks. There’s a saying: 'You can’t get a donkey to gallop, but you can hold back a racehorse’s pace.'
And I also feel a huge relief because this time we have everything in order with reliability, for which we must thank our engine builders. In recent weeks, they have made tremendous efforts to eliminate technical problems, although this issue can never be completely closed, and this work must continue."
