Jenson Button: It takes time for everything to work.
Formula 1 champion of 2009, Aston Martin F1 ambassador Jenson Button on the challenging start of the season, Fernando Alonso's career, and confidence in success...
Question: Ahead is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. What do you feel when mentioning this legendary track?
Jenson Button: Silverstone always has a fantastic atmosphere. It doesn't matter if you're a British driver or not, it's a special race for everyone.
Personally, I've never managed to win the British Grand Prix; I haven't even stood on the podium. Moreover, I've had very bad luck there, having been in the top three twice when something happened. It was very disappointing.
I vividly remember my first race. It was in 2000. I qualified sixth, right behind Michael Schumacher. And I overtook him in the first corner... (laughs) I couldn't believe it. I was only 20 years old. I finished fifth. Not my best result, but one of the most memorable, because I came into the sport very young and competed against greats like Hakkinen and Schumacher.
Silverstone is an incredible track that all drivers love for its smoothness. The fans are magnificent. The atmosphere is festive. A huge stage with live bands and plenty of other entertainment that will keep anyone from getting bored.
Question: This is a home race for Aston Martin. We know that the start of 2026 has been challenging... What do you think about that?
Jenson Button: To some extent, it was expected. Adrian Newey joined the team very late, the contract with Honda was signed very late, and this was a completely new project for them. Other teams have been working with the power unit for many years. Everyone is disappointed with how things are going right now, but we need time for everything to work. The car will become much more competitive. It's just a matter of time.
I hope Fernando Alonso stays. I have a lot of respect for him and admire what he can do behind the wheel of a racing car. I would like him to race for a few more years to show what he is capable of at Aston Martin.
I was Fernando's teammate for two years. To be honest, those were tough years for both of us. So I hope he continues his career. Although I will respect any decision he makes, even if he decides to retire. As a driver, you have to make the decision that is right for you and only you. In such a situation, you have to be selfish. But as a fan, I would love to see him race for the next few years.
If he sees that there is progress and the team is moving in the right direction, I think he will stay for a few more years.
Question: How do you see the future of Aston Martin?
Jenson Button: The team has all the ingredients for success. A fantastic partnership with Honda, Adrian Newey in the aerodynamics department, many talented people in the team. We have everything to win. But success won't come overnight. I understand that Fernando Alonso's fans are disappointed with today's problems, but Formula 1 is a technical sport. The team needs time.
Adrian Newey is the best in his field. He thinks innovatively. He is extraordinary. The ideas he comes up with, the fact that he has won world championships with several teams... Newey is the best. He is the best in his field. He will find the weaknesses and push the boundaries of what is possible. He is a true genius, and Aston Martin has found the right person. I am very interested to watch his work.
