California has mandated that roughly 11,000 residents retake their written driving tests after the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) found “discrepancies” hinting at potential widespread cheating in this fundamental evaluation.

While the DMV hasn’t directly specified the cheating methods, their somewhat vague description strongly suggests some form of digital misconduct:

“The California DMV has identified irregularities in certain driver knowledge test outcomes that may point to instances of cheating,” a DMV spokesperson stated to the San Francisco Chronicle. “During our routine internal monitoring, we assessed multiple data points and observed patterns indicating that some individuals might have attempted to bypass the testing process using various cheating techniques.”

A post from a Reddit user who received a notification from the California DMV (username withheld for privacy).

Drivers whose test outcomes were deemed “potentially problematic” received a notice (similar to the one above) informing them that they must retake the test to avoid having their licenses revoked.

An internal audit conducted by the DMV found that the discrepancies were not linked to any technical or AI errors with the test itself, though the Department did not eliminate the possibility that some drivers used AI to take the test on their behalf. The DMV chose not to disclose which version of the test could be manipulated by the alleged cheaters; California offers both online and in-person testing.

According to the DMV, this information will remain confidential until the state completes its criminal investigation. This situation goes beyond mere grade-school plagiarism. The DMV has already referred “several” cases to law enforcement; no further information was given, but it seems probable that prosecutors will focus on those who facilitated the cheating.

I understand the driver’s handbook is extensive, but even California provides resources for individuals seeking to prepare before taking their written tests.

It’s not that difficult, folks. Seriously.
