Concerns are increasing as cars become more interconnected, and for good reason. Whether it involves government surveillance or thieves who can steal vehicles in under 30 seconds, everyday drivers have more to worry about now than they did five years ago. With increasingly clever criminals, people require better protection, and Ford offers a straightforward yet effective tool for owners: a remote engine start inhibitor integrated into the Ford Pass app.

This feature comes with the Ford Security Package, which owners of certain 2024 and newer F-Series models have had access to for some time now. The new development is that Ford has broadened the availability of this feature across its entire lineup, now including the 2026 Expedition, 2026 Bronco Sport, and 2026 Mustang Mach-E. Using it is quite easy; simply navigate to the “Monitoring” section on the Ford Pass home screen and slide a toggle. That’s all there is to it.

This type of embedded, factory-supported security technology offers clear advantages over aftermarket solutions. Firstly, your dealer will likely be more accommodating if any issues arise. Secondly, there’s no need to tamper with the vehicle’s computer systems or rely on an external app or gadget for operation. By using the same app that many Ford owners use daily to remotely lock, unlock, and start their vehicles, they can ensure that no one can start their vehicle—even if the key has been left inside.

While I haven’t encountered anyone with a dislike for Ford’s door-mounted SecuriCode keyless entry system, this addresses a valid concern regarding it. If your key happens to be locked inside the vehicle and someone learns your door code, they could easily drive off with it. This system guarantees that no one can start the vehicle without access to your phone or the “engine start inhibit deactivate” code available within the app.

Moreover, if the feature malfunctions for any reason, such as a weak cell signal, users can simply enter the specified deactivation code and proceed.

Ford pairs this engine start inhibitor with vehicle tracking for stolen cars, which is also included in the security package. Owners can even add a camera provided by Ford to monitor the items in the truck bed. Interestingly, these features are not offered on the F-150 Lightning, and it’s unclear why. However, if you are a proud owner of a new F-150, Super Duty, Expedition, Bronco Sport, or Mustang Mach-E who has experienced theft in the past, rest assured that this is designed for you.

If only it could safeguard your taillights…
