"George has much more to lose than Kimi."

Gunther Steiner believes George Russell’s future at Mercedes is still secure, although he may not remain the team's top driver. The former Haas team principal considers Kimi Antonelli to be the most surprising figure of the 2026 season. "We knew he was fast," Steiner told Sport Bild. "But I didn’t anticipate he would put so much pressure on George Russell so quickly and win multiple races." Antonelli arrives at Spa leading the championship by 25 points over his more seasoned teammate. "For George, there’s a lot more on the line than for Kimi," Steiner remarked. "If Antonelli doesn’t clinch the title this year, it's not a disaster. He’s only 19. "Conversely, George really needs a significant achievement now; otherwise, his chances for a world championship title could be done." Nevertheless, Steiner does not believe Russell is racing for his seat at Mercedes—yet his position might be in jeopardy. "George is a very talented driver," he emphasized. "Every top team requires a strong second driver. There can only be one winner, after all."
