Russell is secure, but Antonelli is in second place, according to Steiner.

"For George, the stakes are considerably higher compared to Kimi."

Gunther Steiner believes that George Russell's future with Mercedes is likely secure, although he may no longer be the team's primary driver. The former Haas team principal considers Kimi Antonelli to be the biggest surprise of the 2026 season.

"We knew he was fast," Steiner remarked to Sport Bild. "However, I didn’t anticipate him putting George Russell under such immediate pressure and winning multiple races."

Heading to Spa, Antonelli is leading the championship by 25 points over his more experienced teammate.

"For George, there’s considerably more at stake than for Kimi," Steiner stated. "If Antonelli doesn’t clinch the title this year, it won’t be a tragedy since he’s only 19.

"On the other hand, George requires a significant achievement now. If not, his opportunity for a world championship title could slip away."

Still, Steiner does not believe Russell is driving solely for his future with Mercedes, though his status might be in jeopardy.

"George is an excellent driver," he emphasized. "Every top team requires a strong second driver. After all, there can only be one winner."
